Returnable Transport Packaging

The market for returnable transport packaging across all industry sectors continues to grow as the emphasis on supply chain optimization merges with an increased focus on sustainable supply chain practices. These two important drivers account for the increased number of returnable transport packaging (RTP) solutions that have evolved during the past decade in manufacturing, distribution, food production/processing and retail. While the early RTP initiatives were found in the automotive industry, in particular in Europe and Japan, winning RTP practices and products have found their way into numerous industries across the globe.

The earlier emphasis on supply chain effectiveness was mainly cost driven and over the past 10-20 years the gains in productivity and capital use effectiveness are well documented. The value of multi-trip packaging solutions in closed loop or expanded loop applications, when properly analyzed, is impressive and has been realized by many industries other than automotive. The soft drink, appliance, electronics, pharmaceutical, medical and fruit/vegetable producers are some of the industry sectors that have pursued and implemented integrated RTP systems and solutions.

The growing push for sustainable supply chain solutions will continue to bring new perspectives to the world of RTP. While the cost reduction rationale will remain a key driver, changes in regulations, society expectations, food handling/safety practices and identification/tracking technology will present an expanding array of opportunities for growth in the RTP market. Across many industries, programs are underway to improve overall product and system design, increase program lifespan (number of trips and length of application), reduce material utilization and improve system processes and technologies.
