Much as we hate to admit it, growth cannot be mandated nor even expected. It must be earned and it requires hard work.

 

Growth happens one customer at a time. More sales build share of customer. Multiple customers build share of market. And strong share in multiple markets builds industry dominance.

 

Growth can only derive from one of two sources: current customers or non-customers. Current customers that are not sole sourced are splitting business with your competition. Non-customers within your target market segments have chosen not to do business with you, although they probably are aware of your capabilities. Non-customers outside of your existing segments require new products or new methods of delivery to achieve a competitive value position.

 

In each of these cases, the challenge is to offer convincing evidence of superior value. The interpretation and delivery of value may be quite different by segment and even by account.
